[978908145030]
$19.95

Sinologist Simon Leys: "The reading of this book is an indispensable introduction for everybody desiring to approach and understand the formidable ferments at work in the Chinese artistic world at this moment."

In this book Sus Van Elzen investigates the transformation of China and the city of Beijing from 1949 up to the 2008 Olympics and beyond, with a particular focus on the role of artists and architects. The transformation of an urban environment, driven by economic and demographic forces but also by the cultural and political agenda of the government. The dynamic relationship, often thorny, between a powerful centralized government and an emerging group of free thinking artists.
